Project key details
- Client: Go Gas Holding FZE
- Project name: Banda Upstream Development Project
- Location: The Islamic Republic of Mauritania (on and offshore)
- Type: Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) update
- Timeline: project commenced November 2024 and was completed in November 2025.
Our team updated the existing ESIA originally prepared in 2013, ensuring the project complied with the current national regulations and international environmental standards, including the IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles 4. This work supported sustainable development while minimising ecological impacts.
The Banda Upstream Development Project aims to develop natural gas resources off Mauritania, contributing to the country’s goals of achieving universal electricity access by 2030 and developing its energy infrastructure. Additionally, the project supports Mauritania's aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 11% by 2030 by providing a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional heavy fuel oil-fired electricity generation.
The ESIA update focussed on the most critical environmental and social impacts, including a critical habitat assessment and a climate change risk assessment. We also conducted extensive engagement with local communities and stakeholders, ensuring local perspectives were integrated into the project.
Tetra Tech RPS Energy was selected for this project due to our proven track record in delivering high-quality assessments that meet regulatory requirements. Our extensive experience conducting ESIA updates includes numerous projects in West Africa and internationally, including previous work in Mauritania.
During this project, our team collaborated closely with regulators, local consultants, and key stakeholders. We delivered an updated ESIA, a public consultation report, and an environmental and social management plan (ESMP). Our team also supported the client in meeting all submission requirements on time.
Morag Wilson, Associate Director, Tetra Tech RPS Energy, says:
"We are delighted to have supported Mauritania’s cleaner energy goals by addressing critical impacts for this project and through extensive stakeholder collaboration.”
