Aviation

Keeping the world connected is at the core of the aviation industry. But with pressures to build sustainably whilst driving economic growth, the sector must continue to evolve. Striking the optimum balance between the economic benefits, construction costs and environmental effects of the aviation industry is paramount.

Airport development expertise

Airports are the bridge between the ground and the air, where users and operators meet. Airport maintenance, upgrades and expansions can be disruptive, while new airport developments can be complex and costly to execute.

Our airport consultants have decades of experience in projects delivered both airside and landside. Our unique blend of aviation consultancy services adds long term value across every stage of development, from streamlining airport operations and resilience, to providing sustainable design solutions.

We’re passionate about delivering cost-effective and high performance air infrastructure. Our expertise spans masterplanning and conducting environmental assessments, to designing and project managing airport schemes to boost both economic benefit and passenger experience.

Low carbon aviation schemes

It’s clear the link between aviation and net zero carbon is complex. Aviation schemes present many environmental challenges, from lowering carbon emissions and achieving biodiversity net gain, to reducing air quality and noise.

Through environmental assessments, we provide sustainable solutions for airport developments that deliver economic benefit with less environmental and community impact. To achieve aviation sustainability targets, we can help you create a carbon neutral strategy and low carbon designs.

Airport planning

Whether it’s delivering new airport components or upgrading existing facilities, navigating planning policy plays a pivotal role in delivering successful aviation schemes. Our planning consultants can help you shape a realistic, deliverable and affordable plan. To avoid project delay, we engage our environment specialists from the outset to conduct essential surveys and assessments.

During this stage, we can offer strategic advice on relevant consenting regimes within the aviation planning policy framework:

  • Strategic planning advice on major development schemes and infrastructure projects
  • Preparation, submission and management of applications and appeals
  • Negotiating planning conditions and agreements
  • Stakeholder engagement and public consultation
  • Expert witness services at Public Inquiries
Airport design

From our experience working with airlines on regional airports, business aviation operators, hangars and engine ground running areas, we understand the challenges of different budget constraints and optimising passenger experience.

Our aviation team specialise in airport building design and airfield infrastructure design. Led by our architects, civil and structural engineers, building services and airfield planners, we support our clients with:

  • Airside/landside infrastructure – We designed the rehabilitation of the complete airside infrastructure at Guernsey Airport, and the rehabilitation of runways at Dublin and Shannon Airports.
  • Airfield ground lighting – At Dublin Airport, we designed the upgrade to the runway AGL system to an LED system
  • Airfreight facilities
  • Business aviation facilities – We designed new facilities for a business aviation tenant building at London Luton Airport, with a focus on reducing the amount of geotechnical remediation work required
  • Cargo and passenger terminals – At London Gatwick Airport, we provided new CTA and e-Gate facilities, an extension to Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport and a new terminal facility at Southend Airport
  • Maintenance hangars – At Birmingham and East Midlands Airports, we provided the concept design and delivery for new hangar facilities
Project management

Project delivery can be costly and time consuming. Without the right strategy, clients and investors can be exposed to significant and unnecessary risk. To thrive in this climate of constant change, delivering improvements requires technical solutions, new work processes, organisational changes and benefit realisation.

Our dedicated project and cost management teams can help to identify cost-effective delivery options and monitor progress throughout the project lifecycle. From strategic advice on project methodology and managing risk, to program management and effective cost management, our mix of skills ensure we always balance the cost/time/quality/risk matrix. We support our clients as trusted delivery advisors, committed to ensuring value for money within any budget.

At RAAF Base Amberley we successfully delivered a variety of airfield facilities for No. 35 Squadron. For the Royal Australia Air Force’s No. 6 Squadron, we led the project team to provide new administrative, operations and training facilities for Growler aircraft operations.

Environmental assessments

Environmental assessments are integral to the planning and development process. They can identify adverse environmental effects in the early stages of an aviation project and ultimately contribute to producing a sustainable development.

With vast experience advising on various environmental and sustainability matters across the aviation industry, we specialise in supporting airport plans with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Health Impact Assessment, flood risk, sustainability and net zero carbon consultancy.

Our assessors can guide your projects from inception to completion and advise on the most effective methods of delivering sustainable developments. We have extensive experience conducting energy assessments to reduce building energy demand and integrating renewable technologies in all building types.

As a founding member of the UK’s Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), we are accredited under the prestigious EIA Quality Mark; committed to maintain and improve standards of EIA.

We provided input to the Environmental Impact Statement at Western Sydney Airport, one of Australia’s most anticipated transport infrastructure initiatives.

Digital design

Digital design is constantly evolving and improving airport facilities and management. Employable across all stages of a project’s lifecycle, design software can impact both new and existing airport structures to streamline operations and maintenance. Our designs incorporate state-of-the-art software and immersive design expertise to build smarter systems and structures. Using augmented reality (AR), computer-aided design (CAD), building information modelling (BIM) and data inputs to inform digital twin applications, we can help you improve stakeholder management across all phases of a development.

Airport Health, Safety and Risk Management

Airports present very specific health and safety risks, especially with respect to the wide range of different properties encountered on site, each presenting unique compliance management issues. Whether it is terminals, hangars or maintenance areas, compliance with health and safety legislation is critical.

Our accredited asbestos, legionella, fire safety and risk experts help our clients to mitigate risk and achieve compliance.

We facilitate a smooth risk management process, strengthened by our innovative online compliance management system. This easily accessible system provides visibility for all of your health and safety documentation in one place. Real-time compliance management data is always on hand in order to efficiently and effectively manage health and safety risk.

We have provided a compliance management role for British Airways at London Heathrow and regional airports, as well as safety audits for the defence sector.

Are we flying high with airfield sustainability?

The aviation industry is facing revolutionary change in pursuit of a net zero-emission reality. And in the UK the industry has strengthened its commitment by becoming the first national aviation body to pledge to net zero emissions by 2050 - but how far away are we from where we need to be?

Our Airfield Systems Associate, Massimo Denni, takes a look at Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) - how far we've come and what else needs to be done to move towards a greener future.
