Our highly experienced Commercial Fisheries team support interaction between developers and other groups with interests in the marine environment. These include the fishing community, NGOs, conservationists, policy-makers and academic institutions, during offshore projects such as offshore wind and oil and gas.

We are specialists in fisheries stakeholder engagement, project management and coordination. We draw on our industry knowledge and established networks to communicate effectively with stakeholders in their own environments. We help clients build firm foundations for ongoing interaction, so that they can avoid common stumbling blocks and establish processes that support them throughout the life of their project.
We use various data sources to support and contribute to assessments (including the EIA process), and to offer clear advice to our clients. We also act as a resource for other RPS teams, working closely with a wide range of in-house experts, including ports, marine biology and marine consenting/permitting specialists.
Our commercial fisheries expertise
Our Commercial Fisheries team have backgrounds in fisheries regulation and environmental assessment, including an understanding of current mitigation measures. We also understand the needs and demands of the different offshore project types our clients work on. Our expertise includes:
Cost-effective support for stakeholder engagement, such as communication, planning and project design
Supporting clients to define consistent messaging and frame discussions; setting up the liaison process and frameworks for future interaction
Stakeholder engagement plans and technical reports; contributing to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, as well as experience in managing EIA programmes
Reviewing and interpreting fishing activity data from a number of sources, which are combined into meaningful and accessible reporting for clients
Maintaining strong networks with fishing industry representatives and leaders
Working closely with Fisheries Liaison Officers (FLO) or local equivalents. We also maintain a directory of approved FLOs to ensure high-quality service and effective handovers between post-holders
Awareness of local fishing cultures and cultural differences, working with local representatives and in-country partners
Supporting evaluations and administration of cooperation agreements
Providing clear advice for developers on compensation measures and options, based on available data
Where applicable, offering tailored services based on client goals and requirements, drawing on our team’s combined experience of 60 years working with fisheries
