Hazard watch: Protecting your workforce from lead exposure
Lead remains a pervasive occupational hazard in industries from battery manufacture and smelting to paint removal and e‑waste recycling, and even low‑to‑moderate exposures can cause kidney damage, cardiovascular and nervous‑system effects, anaemia and increased cancer risk. UK law (CLAW) and HSE guidance (EH40) require employers to assess and control lead risks and to carry out biological monitoring where appropriate; we have reintroduced workplace lead exposure analysis to help organisations measure blood lead levels, ensure statutory limits are met and protect employee health.
