N2265 SEA5000 phase 1: Hunter Class frigate facilities
RPS is supporting the Department of Defence in the delivery of phase one of Project N2265 SEA5000, a critical element of the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter Class Frigate Program.
Running from 2019 to 2026, the project forms part of the Navy Capability Infrastructure Sub-program (NCIS), delivering new facilities in Adelaide to enable combat systems development, introduction into service, and long-term sustainment of the Hunter Class frigates.
The challenge
The Department of Defence is undertaking its most ambitious ship acquisition program since World War II, introducing new classes of large vessels to strengthen Australia’s naval capability. As part of this program, the phase one initiative requires delivery of specialised facilities that can support the construction, testing, and sustainment of the Hunter Class frigates within a continuous naval shipbuilding program.
Our approach
RPS was engaged by the Department of Defence to provide project and program management services in support of phase one of this project. This includes managing the delivery of key facilities within the NCIS framework at Osborne and St Kilda:
-
Land Based Test Site (Development and Sustainment) – St Kilda, SA
-
Land Based Test Site (Production) – Osborne, SA
-
Naval Construction Branch and HMAS Encounter (Navy Headquarters – SA) working facilities – Osborne, SA
By applying structured project management methodologies, RPS supports the Department of Defence in achieving value, mitigating program risks, and maintaining delivery alignment with broader naval shipbuilding timelines.
The result
When complete, the N2265 facilities will provide fit-for-purpose infrastructure to support the Hunter Class Frigate Program, underpinning the introduction, testing, and sustainment of the Royal Australian Navy’s next-generation fleet. This work contributes to Australia’s long-term sovereign shipbuilding capability and supports Defence’s strategic objective of a strong, sustainable naval industry.
