Changes to the National Planning Practice Guidance: what you need to know

Since the National Planning Practice Framework was published in 2012, the supplementary guidance to assist the implementation of the Framework has been anything but static. Introduced in 2014 as an online resource, the intention was to allow the guidance to be responsive and flexible.

Since 2014 we have seen a series of iterative changes, however between 21-23 July 2019 the Government landed the biggest set of updates so far - with changes to 22 topic areas.

This includes a number of amendments and new paragraphs intended to align guidance with the position of the Courts, as well as reaffirm the approach of Government. It is perhaps no coincidence that this significant cache of changes have been introduced just before the changing of the guard at No.10.

To help make the updates easy to understand, we are providing a summary note to identify the key changes made and the potential implications for those engaged either with planning applications/appeals or strategic promotions.

With this guidance already in force, planners and developers alike need to engage now - and particular consideration given to emerging schemes
