British Airways Health and Safety Compliance

In 2015, following a competitive tendering exercise, we were awarded a compliance management contract with British Airways comprising fire safety risk assessments, asbestos management consultancy and noise and indoor air quality assessments across their UK portfolio. This compliance management contract has been renewed with the additional service of legionella risk assessments.

In June 2016 we were awarded the legionella risk assessment contract due, in part, to our accreditation with UKAS for undertaking legionella risk assessments. Following the successful demonstration of our web based risk management system, BHI, it is now employed as a comprehensive risk management system to proactively manage fire, asbestos and legionella compliance.

We implemented a robust transition plan which enabled us to seamlessly transfer the contract over from the incumbent supplier, including a TUPE transfer. The success of the implementation plan, together with the resulting contract delivery, has provided our client with the confidence that they have chosen the right service partner to support them in achieving legislative compliance.

Challenge

The diversity of the portfolio, from hangars, through to first class lounges and business critical data centres, provided the opportunity to demonstrate our ability to manage complex technical projects.

Operating predominately airside, with associated strict security protocols and operational constraints, provided additional challenges to the efficient delivery of surveys and minimising resource commitment from both the client and appointed service partners.

At the inception of the contract a significant proportion of compliance data was held in a traditional paper based format, which was held by several personnel working from locations across the UK. This provided challenges in accessing data and the monitoring of the completion of recommendations following audits and risk assessments.

We have been delivering H&S consultancy for over twenty years. During this time, we have gained a reputation for market leading technical advice with a pragmatic, solution focused approach. This experience enabled us to overcome these initial challenges, enabling us to develop a mutually rewarding partnership with British Airways.

Solution

Working across a portfolio as diverse as British Airways, with its range of buildings and complexity, required personnel with exceptional technical knowledge and experience of working in a similar environment. The technical team selected met these needs, together with being well organised whilst flexible to meet the operational demands of a dynamic business environment.

The efficient programming of visits was essential. With an extensive maintenance base, terminal locations and off-site headquarters, it was critical to organise assessments in a logical sequence to avoid excessive travel between locations. Especially important was merging visits to airside locations, significantly reducing the time taken to complete the necessary paperwork and organising escorts.

The introduction of a web-based management system, as a central repository for compliance data, provided significant benefits. The ability of all stakeholders to access information enabled the close out of recommendations from assessments to be proactively managed, with a traffic light system providing an immediate visual appreciation of compliance across the portfolio.
