North Shore Youth Activation Hub

RPS has worked with Townsville City Council to facilitate the development of a popular youth-oriented play space for Townsville’s Northern Beaches.

Challenge

Following a successful community consultation process by Townsville City Council for a youth-focused urban space for the Northern Beaches area, RPS was commissioned to develop detailed designs and documentation for the project.

The consultation process highlighted the need for a range of highly active recreational zones in a constrained space, and limited funding would make a creative design approach key.

RPS design concept for North Shore Youth Activation Hub - skate bowl area

Solution

Working with Council’s project delivery team, RPS tested the high-level concept for the space. Our team of designers then worked with a specialist skate park consultant and consulting engineers to balance a number of on-site uses, and realise Council's vision for a robust and safe recreation space for the community to enjoy.

The project includes a fully shaded, 600m2 skate zone with a two-level bowl and urban-style skate area. Other play and recreation spaces include a teen-focused playground, multi-sport courts, a parkour/fitness circuit and DJ music booth. The works incorporated state-of-the-art surveillance technology, shelters, seating, and other facilities.

To help the community experience the project and its benefits before construction began, our team also created a design fly-through animation video.
