Metlink Rail Signage Renewal Programme
Greater Wellington Regional Council engaged RPS to deliver the Metlink Rail Signage Renewal Programme across railway stations in the greater Wellington region.
Metlink manages a large signage portfolio across the Wellington rail network, with station signage providing directional, rail, bus and timetable information for customers.
The programme delivered a renewed signage suite across 48 railway stations, helping improve consistency, clarity and customer wayfinding across the network.
The challenge
Metlink's rail signage portfolio included approximately 1,800 signs across the Wellington rail network. A review found that many existing signage assets were no longer fit for purpose.
Issues included out-of-date information, missing customer information, inconsistent signage across station precincts, text-heavy and cluttered layouts, signs not located at key customer decision points, and physical damage or vandalism requiring regular replacement.
The client needed a programme delivery approach that could support renewal of the signage suite across every railway station in the region, while improving consistency and customer usability across a large and dispersed public transport network.
Our approach
RPS was engaged to deliver the programme of works across the rail station network.
The team supported implementation of a new signage system to streamline the signage design process and improve consistency across station environments.
RPS also supported delivery of a new wayfinding signage package across the stations, helping align signage outcomes with customer information, navigation and network usability objectives.
For the DA Brown refurbishment, ANU required a significant refurbishment of approximately 2,100 square metres of existing building area on Level 2 to support its Pathways College. The scope includes flexible teaching and learning spaces, study spaces, a computer lab, staff areas, amenities, breakout spaces, a welcoming entry and building services replacement, with minor supporting works on Level 1 and externally.

The programme delivered the new signage suite across 48 railway stations throughout the greater Wellington region.
The renewed signage package helped address issues with consistency, clarity, location and information quality across the network, supporting a more legible and customer-focused station experience.
The engagement demonstrates RPS' capability in programme delivery for public transport environments, helping clients coordinate asset renewal across large, distributed networks where customer experience, consistency and operational coordination are central to success.
