Surveying at scale for Sydney Metro
RPS' surveying team has supported the investigation, acquisition, design and engineering of all stages of New South Wales' Sydney Metro, with more than ten years of work across the Northwest, City and Southwest, Metro West, and Western Sydney Airport project phases.
Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport project, covering a large geographical area and multiple complex physical interfaces with the existing network.
RPS has been awarded land survey, substratum and utilities investigation contracts across all Sydney Metro projects, reinforcing our reputation as the leading provider of linear infrastructure survey services in New South Wales.
With more than a decade of work on this region-shaping project, our scope of work covers numerous project sites and interfaces with network stakeholders including Transport for NSW, Sydney Metro, Sydney Trains, Ausgrid, Jemena, Sydney Water, NSW Land Registry Services (LRS), and the broader community.
RPS surveying and geospatial deliverables for Sydney Metro have included:
- Boundary and acquisition surveys and plans
- Survey control networks
- Easement plans
- Survey adjusted cadastral models (SACM)
- Detail topographic and basement surveys
- GIS
- Aerial drone and LiDAR surveys
- Laser scanning
- Extensive utilities investigation.
These works included the preparation of land acquisition cadastral plans and subsequent registration with LRS for all stages of the project, and managing technically challenging programs affecting surface properties, road crossings, and water crossings.
Surveying with stakeholders at the centre
RPS maintained project progress while facilitating the smooth operation of existing infrastructure. Recognising differing stakeholder requirements at each site, we implemented early stakeholder engagement and held ongoing internal and client workshops and lessons learned sessions to refine and streamline processes.
Our team collaborated closely with NSW Land Registry Services (LRS) to streamline approvals for land and complex deposited plans, ensuring tasks met tight contractual land access dates and project deadlines. This facilitated the unlocking of property to allow the project to progress.
RPS delivered a substantial volume of project data to the client and completed the works without incident, highlighting our commitment to safety and supporting Sydney Metro’s focus on safety as its number one priority.
