Project management support for KiwiRail in New Zealand / Aotearoa
RPS is working with KiwiRail to help deliver a major program of upgrades and improvements to rail infrastructure in Wellington.
Major rail infrastructure works
KiwiRail is in the process of upgrading the rail infrastructure in the Wellington region. The large-scale program aims to upgrade or renew the region’s current infrastructure, improve efficiency, and add capacity for more passenger trains as well as freight services.
The upgrade program has been divided into several sub projects including the re-laying of 4.2 kilometres of track in the North Island Main Trunk Tunnel 2 (completed in April 2022) and replacing 8.8 kilometres of track on the Wairarapa Line Tunnel 2 (planning for Christmas 2024 delivery).
To limit train service disruptions, each project requires meticulous planning – with some projects involving the coordination of more than 150 personnel, working 24 hours a day, to deliver the required work within very tight deadlines.

Project management secondment
To facilitate the delivery of the works, RPS has provided a project manager on secondment to KiwiRail to assist in the delivery of several of the rail upgrade projects.
The work has included procuring detailed design and delivery packages, solving delivery and site issues, developing contracts, assisting with financial forecasting, contributing to performance reporting, and identifying and securing the required approvals, access, materials, inspections and permits to deliver and complete project work.
The rail upgrade program is due to be completed by 2026.
