Metlink Driver Facilities Renewal Programme
Greater Wellington Regional Council engaged RPS to support the renewal of Metlink driver-only facilities across the Wellington region.
The programme involved construction of eight new prefabricated facilities for bus drivers at sites across Houghton Bay, Karori, Wilton, Mairangi, Lyall Bay, Highbury, Miramar and Johnsonville.
RPS supported the client from scope definition and procurement through to project management of installation, services and civil works, helping deliver a consistent facilities solution across multiple constrained sites.
The challenge
Existing driver-only facilities across the Wellington network were in poor condition and required replacement to better support bus drivers during service operations.
Although a standard design solution was required, each site presented different physical and service constraints. These included limited space, adjacent obstructions, uneven ground conditions and varied services layouts.
The programme also required coordination across dispersed locations, with demolition required at several sites to make way for new prefabricated units. The client needed a delivery approach that could manage site-specific constraints while maintaining consistency, value for money and programme control.
Our approach
RPS was engaged to help the client finalise the scope of work and requirements for the new driver facilities.
The team led the procurement process and supported engagement of a suitable supplier, including consideration of site-specific limitations and the need to deliver a practical, repeatable solution across the network.
RPS was then engaged to project manage the overall installation, services and civil works. This included coordinating delivery activity across multiple sites and supporting the client, supplier and civil contractor through implementation.
The result
The programme delivered eight new driver-only facilities across the Wellington region, replacing ageing assets and improving the support infrastructure available to bus drivers across the Metlink network.
RPS helped Greater Wellington Regional Council move from scope definition through procurement and delivery, supporting a consistent approach across sites with varied constraints and conditions.
The engagement demonstrates RPS' capability in project and programme management, procurement support and distributed transport infrastructure delivery, particularly where small-scale assets need to be coordinated across multiple live network locations.
