University of Sydney Deferred Maintenance Roofing and Façades
The University of Sydney engaged RPS to provide project and program management services for a multi-year deferred maintenance program focused on roofing and façade works across its campuses.
The program supports the University’s objective to refurbish, revitalise and enhance existing infrastructure while extending the life of important campus assets, including heritage-listed buildings.
Our role includes end-to-end project management services for design management and construction management, helping the University plan, coordinate and deliver a complex portfolio of repair, renewal, reinstatement and upgrade works across operational campus environments.
The challenge
The University needed to progress a broad program of building fabric works across multiple campus assets while maintaining daily teaching, research and operational activity.
The works included roofing, façade, drainage, mechanical and associated building services activities across buildings with different ages, conditions, access constraints and stakeholder requirements. In some cases, the assets involved heritage considerations, requiring careful planning so maintenance outcomes could be achieved while respecting the architectural and cultural significance of the buildings.
The challenge was to coordinate a program of works across multiple buildings and delivery packages, manage live-site impacts, maintain safety, and provide clear visibility of scope, cost, timing and risk for the University’s development team.
Our approach
RPS provided project and program management services across the design and construction phases of the deferred maintenance program.
Our team coordinated consultants, contractors and University stakeholders to manage planning, design development, procurement, construction activities and stakeholder communications. This included developing practical, staged delivery strategies that could be implemented within an active university environment, with careful consideration of access, safety and continuity of campus operations.
Where heritage-listed assets were involved, we supported the assessment of repair options and delivery approaches that balanced durability, cost-effectiveness and respect for existing building fabric.
Through disciplined governance, proactive risk management and regular stakeholder engagement, our team helped the University maintain control across a complex portfolio of works, supporting informed decision-making and consistent delivery momentum.
The result
The deferred maintenance program has supported the renewal and protection of existing University of Sydney assets across multiple campus buildings.
The works have included roofing, façade, drainage, mechanical and associated building services repairs, renewals and reinstatements, helping improve building performance and extend the life of important campus infrastructure.
By providing end-to-end project and program management, RPS has helped the University progress a complex portfolio of maintenance works in live education environments while supporting safe delivery, stakeholder alignment and long-term asset outcomes.
