Neasden Heavy Maintenance Facility Modifications

As part of the 4 line Modernisation Programme, we worked with London Underground (LU) and Arcadis in the design of major alterations to the Neasden Depot. The design involves internal modifications to the original depot's long shed and lifting shed in order to provide facilities for the mid-life overhaul of the S7 and S8 rolling stock.

Challenge

Through both feasibility and detailed design stages, our architecture teams provided premises design and overall design co-ordination for the project, incorporating a complex phased design process and detailed design outputs that were split across multiple packages.

We were responsible for the space planning and design co-ordination, ensuring that the maintenance tasks required, as part of the overhaul process, were safely integrated into new facilities, plant and equipment. This involved an in-depth analysis of the existing casualty maintenance tasks with the depot maintenance and operation teams.

Modifications of the depot included pit infills, level access platforms, new CD shore supply and contractor rails to support door overhaul, high level access platforms to support roof HVAC overhaul, pit deepening, space planning and plant equipment to support gangway and coupler overhaul processes.

Solution

Our teams were involved in the co-ordination of other disciplines including, LVAC, DC Power, and Mechanical, Civil and Structural Engineering. We encouraged the use of 3D-modelling for the existing depot infrastructure to ensure design co-ordination of the new services and structures with the existing / retained infrastructure. This bought an enhanced level of design certainty, and construction and maintenance safety awareness to the design process.

We worked collaboratively with Arcadis and the LU project team to ensure that designs were progressively assured and accepted by discipline engineers, depot, fleet and union staff, allowing design approvals to be achieved in record time.
