Marinus Link community and consumer engagement

RPS is working with Marinus Link to build strong relationships with local communities to support the development of a new electricity interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria.

Underground and undersea connection

The National Electricity Market is transforming as coal-fired power plants continue to be retired and renewable generation assets like wind and solar, take their place.

Marinus Link is a proposed 1500-megawatt capacity undersea and underground electricity connection to further link Tasmania and Victoria as part of Australia’s future electricity grid. The interconnector will enable excess energy generated by renewables to be transferred between the two states.

Marinus Link will be supported by the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) which will include 240 kilometres of new and upgraded transmission lines and other energy infrastructure.

Specialist communication and engagement support

RPS was appointed in late 2020 to provide specialist communications and community engagement support for the Marinus Link project’s planning and design phase.

Our consultants developed a comprehensive engagement strategy for the project’s planning and environmental approvals phase, including extensive local engagement in Gippsland, Victoria. We also provided support to develop a Sustainability Framework which will inform the community benefit sharing approach. Our team also developed and delivered the consumer engagement approach to meet the Australian Energy Regulator’s requirements.

Ongoing engagement

RPS has planned and supported the delivery engagement programs across Tasmania and Victoria to support the release of the proposed Marinus Link route, information about the possible project impacts and to raise awareness of the project.

The team is continuing its work with communities in Tasmania and Victoria, building trust and social licence, and building capacity within the Marinus Link team.
