HMAS Watson Redevelopment, Sydney
RPS is supporting the Department of Defence to redevelop iconic Sydney naval base, HMAS Watson.
Challenge
Located at South Head in the Sydney suburb of Watsons Bay, HMAS Watson is a key strategic location for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in New South Wales. Operating continuously for more than 70 years, HMAS Watson was struggling to meet the requirements of a modern Navy base and was identified by Defence for a phased redevelopment. Now underway, this seven-year program of works will deliver:
- A new training precinct for Royal Australian Navy personnel,
- Upgrades to base engineering services,
- New live-in accommodation for Navy trainees,
- A new base entry precinct, and
- Additional car parking.
Solution
RPS had previously managed the planning phase of the project including assisting the Department of Defence through the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works (PWC) approvals process.
Now in the delivery phase, our team is managing the prime contract and is the primary conduit for Defence project stakeholders. In collaboration with the Department of Defence, our team also leads external stakeholder consultation with government ministers and other representatives at the local, state and federal level.
The first stage of the redevelopment—Stage 1 of the new training precinct was completed in Nov 2022, with all redevelopment works due for completion by Jan 2028.
