An underutilised district
The low-lying northern suburban area of Mackay was being underutilised. It predominantly served as a flood plain for the local catchment and was not zoned to support development. There was enormous potential for the area to better serve the local and broader communities.
The large site included two lakes, numerous wetlands, parkland as well as residential and commercial precincts.
Creating a community asset
RPS was engaged to help design a new precinct that would continue to provide flood retention capabilities, but also offer a much-needed recreation and tourist facility for Mackay.
Our planning services team arranged the necessary town planning approvals (including a masterplan planning scheme variation and other subdivision and land use approvals) and worked with the project team designing the estate.
We undertook detailed surveys of the site to assist in the civil engineering design of the estate and subdivision surveys of the approved lots. And our landscape architects developed the landscape masterplans. RPS also provided budgets to ensure the project met feasibility targets.
Andergrove Lakes is now not only functional (for a flood plain) but also a place that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors to Mackay.
