Eight employees across RPS attained a SQA Level 7 Management and Leadership Diploma to advance their professional development. RPS supported the ambitious employees as they attained their diplomas over the last year.
The SQA Level 7 Management and Leadership Diploma is a Degree level qualification designed for individuals to progress their knowledge, skills and behaviour in strategic management and leadership practices, providing them with the tools to successfully navigate a senior or leadership role.
The course was achieved in conjunction with TIGERS (Training Initiative Generating Effective Results Scotland). TIGERS provides bespoke training courses to support workforces in achieving their potential and attaining recognised industry qualifications, work-based qualifications and Modern Apprenticeships. The course is evidence-based, requiring each individual is demonstrate how they have completed all aspects of seven course modules.
Stephen Ferguson has been working for RPS for 16 years, but is eager to learn more, choosing to pursue further qualifications through this course.
”Many times, without realising it, we've already displayed leadership and management qualities. We were just unaware of how particular experiences and decisions contributed to developing our leadership skills.”
As a Delivery Manager, the management side is still new to Stephen. ”The course helped us understand what we did right in past situations and how we helped either prevent negative things from happening or in improving our relationship with our colleagues. It reassured us that we were on the right track and how we can continue to exhibit the correct leadership qualities.”
Stephen had great things to say about the TIGERS trainer, Mary Booth, who ’really gets you thinking’. Mary is a trainer with decades of experience under her belt. ”The course requires them to devise a portfolio of work that exhibits their understanding and competence. For progression, it is much more valuable than a certificate that requires basic knowledge.”
Mary breaks down the activities RPS employees undertook in the course. ”There was a lot of conversation to get them to understand certain aspects. We had regular workshops to go in-depth on what they were working on and what leadership support they needed. They utilise this information by going out and proving the competence of specific modules. Through the course, they get a lot of confidence knowing what they’re doing is right.”
”The procedures at RPS are very good. They provide employees with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership qualities. With these procedures in place and followed so consistently, evidence for great management skills was readily available.”
Though the course was individually assessed, RPS employees undertaking the course collaborated and shared their ideas extensively with each other. ”For me, it was easier because they all personally wanted to do it and to complete it..” Says Mary. ”They supported each other the whole way.”
Stephen continues, adding how undertaking the course with his RPS colleagues provided further perspective. “My colleagues would share their experience and it was very insightful. We were able to see how different people manage different situations. It helped me notice that the way I do things can be different to how others do it and that both can be correct.”
Stephen is eager to put into practice everything he has learned- ” Leadership is understanding. Understanding the area you’re working in, the people you’re working with”. -and become an even greater leader.
”A bit of compassion and understanding goes a long way.”
We would like to congratulate all eight of our RPS employees who have successfully been awarded their SQA Level 7 Management and Leadership Diplomas. Congratulations to Alex Graham, Bryan Howell, Gary Joyce, Marc Brown, Stephen Ferguson, Stephen McLaughlin, Stuart Johnstone and Scott Kennedy.
Many of the RPS employees involved in the course have already started working on the next qualification in their career development which is the Level 9 Diploma, equal to a Master’s Degree.
