West Village is a mixed-use precinct that’s transforming the popular Brisbane suburb of West End.

Challenge

Centred around West End’s iconic 1929 Peters Ice Cream factory and popular Boundary Street shopping and dining precinct, West Village is one of Brisbane’s most significant urban renewal projects. Developed by renowned Japanese construction firm Sekisui House – the creator of other landmark urban renewal projects such as Central Park in Sydney – West Village’s design centres around the creative mixing of heritage and contemporary materials, aesthetics and spaces.

Our Brisbane landscape architecture team has played a lead role in West Village’s design – with a particular focus on the unique green spaces that activate the precinct and bridge the divide between residential, leisure and commercial spaces. The Common is one such space. Opened to the public in late 2018, it’s the first new park to be delivered in Brisbane since 2014 adding 3,300 square metres of public space to West End.

Solution

Drawing on years of experience designing shared spaces that enhance liveability for residents of the inner city, RPS’ design scheme for The Common focused on maximising amenity for people of all ages at all times of the day.

Using whimsical features to encourage through-traffic and break down barriers to entry, this unique urban forest’s design helps draw people into the heart of West Village to experience the precinct’s growing network of laneways, eateries and event spaces.

Features of The Common include a water play area for kids, open zones for fitness classes and movie nights, public art installations, meandering pathways and a planting scheme that perfectly reflects and responds to Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate and lifestyle.
