South Terminal, Gatwick Airport

To achieve a Pier Service Level of 98%, London Gatwick Airport appointed us to provide a new domestic and Common Travel Areas (CTA) product.

This involved the design of a new dedicated passenger route through Pier 1 and into the South Terminal, including a new baggage reclaim and the redevelopment of several areas of the Pier 1. The design encompassed a new coach drop off point and covered walking route, new vertical circulation core, a two-storey domestic reclaim hall and a baggage unload area immediately below and alteration to the existing baggage hall entrance.

Challenge

Located within a busy operational airport, the design team were faced with the issues associated with a constrained site including:

  • Limited amount of space between the existing Pier 1 and adjacent structures
  • Existing services below ground that ran parallel to the existing pier
  • Provision of a baggage conveyor solution to maximise usage and minimise passenger waiting times
  • Location of pre-stressed concrete slab within the new gate area that required modification
  • Budget and programme constraints

Solution

We provided a multi-disciplinary design team, including services as Lead Consultant, Architect, Structural Engineer and Building Services. Positive tangible impacts to the project were provided by:

  • Working closely with all project stakeholders via numerous project workshops during the outline design stage, working to quickly identify the most suitable option for the developed design stage
  • Our experience of working on interface projects gave the team localised knowledge of underground services and foundation locations, proving invaluable when designing the baggage reclaim facility

Following a successful design stage, we were appointed to undertake the Concept Guardian role during construction and awarded a further project in Pier 1 for the installation of E Gates.
