RPS was engaged by the Australian Department of Defence to support one of the largest environmental investigation and remediation programs ever undertaken by the Commonwealth.
Defence is undertaking a national program to review, investigate and implement a comprehensive approach for the management of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on, and in the vicinity of some of its bases around Australia.
Once used extensively worldwide for their effectiveness in fighting liquid fuel fires, Defence began phasing out firefighting foams containing perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as active ingredients in 2004.
Taking a proactive approach and working closely with Commonwealth, state and local authorities in the conduct of environmental investigations, Defence is working towards the effective monitoring and management of PFAS contamination on and in the vicinity of affected sites right across Australia.
Our team of embedded project specialists helped to progress this important program from initial project planning and investigation, to implementation and completion in each location. Combining the skills of our project management, communications and environmental specialists, RPS supported Defence to understand and manage contamination risk.
