Challenge
Opening in 1973, Hayman Theatre was showing its age and in need of restoration. Having worked on a number of development initiatives for Curtin University in the past, our team was engaged to lead the redevelopment in partnership with With Architecture Studio and a team of builders.
The brief was to transform the original brutalist architecture into an inclusive and functional performing arts centre, and make Hayman Theatre a worthy home for Western Australia’s longest running theatre program for decades to come.
Outcome
With all upgrade works to take place in an active university campus environment, a collaborative, problem-solving approach was needed to coordinate the works, minimise operational disruption to students and teaching staff, and deliver the project to schedule.
All upgrades to Hayman Theatre were completed in August 2020, and Curtin University now boasts a performing arts facility that is both architectural and functional, with new spaces including:
-
An upgraded high-quality performing arts theatre
-
All-gender bathroom facilities
-
An internal ramp integration for improved accessibility for the mobility impaired
-
An outdoor covered plaza.
RPS has been recognised for its work on the Hayman Theatre Upgrade project, winning both the ‘Project of the Year’ and ‘Small project of the Year’ categories at the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM)’s Western Australia Project Management Achievement Awards in 2021.
