A Defence communications and information assurance program office required experienced systems engineering support for a long-term communications security remediation program.
The program supports the ongoing availability and resilience of secure communications capability across Defence by addressing technical modernisation across selected communications and information assurance systems.
Our team provides systems engineering and engineering management services, supporting both near-term remediation activities and longer-term strategic phases of the program. The engagement is ongoing and based in Melbourne.
The challenge
Defence communications programs operate in complex technical, operational and governance environments. Changes to secure communications systems need to be carefully defined, assured, integrated and accepted so capability can continue to support Defence operations.
The program required a systems engineering team that could support requirements definition, technical governance, certification, safety, risk, verification, acceptance and certification activities across multiple phases of work.
The challenge was to provide practical engineering leadership while maintaining traceability, managing technical risk and supporting decisions across a program where security, interoperability, configuration control and long-term capability outcomes are critical.
Our approach
Our systems engineers provide engineering management and systems engineering support across the program lifecycle. This includes requirements definition and traceability, technical planning, risk management, verification and acceptance support, and advice on system milestones and delivery phases.
The team has supported the development of core technical and engineering artefacts, including functional performance, operational concept, system engineering management, certification, safety and technical risk documentation.
Our role also includes supporting working groups within the SPO as well as chairing groups across multiple SPOs, advising on program-level technical direction and helping align deliverables, management plans and assurance activities. By working closely with Defence stakeholders, our team helps connect technical detail with the governance and decision-making needed to progress delivery.
In addition to core systems engineering support, the team contributes to broader strategic objectives by helping the client understand emerging technologies, market capability and future technical considerations relevant to secure communications.
The result
Our support provides Defence with experienced systems engineering capability for a technically complex and ongoing communications security program.
The engagement has helped the client define technical requirements, manage engineering and certification frameworks, support risk mitigation, and progress verification and acceptance activities across program phases.
