Camilleri Street District Park, QLD
Located in the northern beaches of Mackay, the Camilleri Street District Park was upgraded to offer more recreational facilities for a growing population, including a skate park and an environmental walkway.
Rapid growth
The Blacks Beach coastal suburb of Mackay had gone through rapid population growth and required more recreation facilities to serve the local community.
There was also a desire to create a hub for young people, which required community consultation and the engagement of specialist skate park designers and engineers. The project also had to reflect the needs of the wider community.
Other considerations included creating pathways through the park, and ensuring the project maintained and enhanced the park’s place within the community.
Improved facilities
RPS was engaged to conduct preliminary investigations and provide an ‘existing conditions’ report as well as conceptual designs and a masterplan for the upgrade, which was presented to the local council.
The team also took part in the community consultation process to both engage and educate residents about the benefits of different design elements, in particular the skate park.
The landscape architect team also helped design a featured pathway to connect each side of the park creating easy flow for the western and eastern residents, and beachgoers.
The completed upgrade of Camilleri Street District Park boasts a youth hub, skate park, an environmental link, shelters, barbeque facilities, water fountains, a dog park, and toilets. Importantly, it has maintained a balance between open space and lush vegetation for the community to enjoy.
