The need to tackle climate impacts and transition to low carbon economies remains the great societal challenge. Developing sustainable and resilient infrastructure is part of this transition and as an industry we have a key role to play in reducing carbon emissions.

Internationally we are mandated to achieve emission reduction targets and a specific target in the UN Sustainable Development Goals is to make our infrastructure more sustainable. These goals have been adopted over 190 countries and set out a blueprint to achieve a fairer and more sustainable future for all.
There is an immediate need to embed sustainability and low carbon solutions at the heart of infrastructure. This needs to be done from the start of projects and continue throughout the lifetime of the asset.
Public and private sector organisations and funding bodies will play a leading role in developing sustainable infrastructure. In industry, we and our clients have a role to play in defining the project vision and the sustainable outcomes. Achieving this will require strong leadership, collaboration with delivery teams and innovation; new ways of thinking and acting must evolve.
Our webinar featured:
- Conall Boland who has joined RPS after 12 years with An Bord Pleanála as Deputy Chair. In his previous roles Conall worked on many strategic infrastructure projects. Conall leads our Sustainability and Net Zero Carbon team in Republic of Ireland. His presentation focused on the RPS approach to sustainability and highlighted solutions delivered for clients on infrastructure projects, giving examples from award winning projects such as the Haulbowline Est Tip Remediation project.
- Ken Waldron of RPS who presented on the St Erth multi-modal Hub transport project in Cornwall. Ken led the RPS design team on this award winning project which implemented the CEEQUAL process with many positive outcomes. and
- We were delighted to be joined by Ian Nicholson, Head of Infrastructure, BRE, who discussed CEEQUAL, the sustainability rating system for infrastructure and how its application can help achieve better environmental outcomes.
