Supporting the development of the South Clyde Energy Centre (SCEC) in Glasgow

31 May 2023

We’re delighted to support AFRY by providing Design and Commercial Management services for the South Clyde Energy Centre (SCEC) development in Glasgow, a joint venture between Fortum and Green Investment Group. The Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility utilises state-of-the-art technologies and is projected for completion in 2025.

Once operational, SCEC is expected to play a significant role in supporting the Scottish Government’s landfill ban, which comes into effect in 2025. The plant will divert up to 350,000 tonnes of residual, non-recyclable waste from landfills each year. As well as generating up to 45 MWe gross of lower carbon electricity, it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 67 kt CO2e per year compared to landfilling. The facility also has the potential to be retrofitted with carbon capture and storage technology in the future.

Our specialist, multi-disciplinary team with extensive experience in UK industrial building design and EfW projects is providing an invaluable baseline for the technically complex design development. The teams supporting the demanding design, procurement, and construction programme include Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Fire Engineering and Commercial Management.

As part of our service, we successfully reworked the complex landmark form and elevational treatment design and engaged with Glasgow City Council to ensure compatibility with current regulations, streamlining consent amendments to avoid project programme delay. Our in-house Fire Engineering team produced a comprehensive fire strategy to ensure compliance with statutory regulations and insurance requirements.

We’re proactively collaborating with AFRY and the wider project team to develop fully coordinated civil and building designs, and structured construction packages tailored to suit the UK market and the Scottish Building Warrant process.

Alan Skipper, Operational Director – Design said: “We’re looking forward to the SCEC’s completion and seeing the facility assist Scotland’s drive for sustainable waste management and energy efficiency. This challenging project’s complexity and focus on collaboration and design coordination play to the strengths and experience of RPS. Our multi-disciplinary team is rising to the challenge.”
