OILMAP Slick Service
Subscribers to RPS OILMAP Slick Service receive daily forecasts of hypothetical, marine oil spill trajectories. These trajectories are assumed to start at the subscriber’s coastal or marine assets (e.g. platforms, pipelines). If a slick is detected, subscribers can use these predictions to help determine if the slick originated from their assets or some other source. They also provide responders with an immediate forecast in the event of a spill. This system is based on RPS OILMAP software suite and Environmental Data Services (EDS). EDS delivers various metocean data sources to OILMAP, resulting in accurate and timely predictions. All predictions are streamlined directly to subscribers’ response tools and/or data portals.
Benefits of OSS
- The system can simulate spills from hundreds of locations, effectively tracking entire network of pipelines and other infrastructure
- Operational data management: integrating model inputs & disseminating model outputs
- Provides “first step” response, e.g. preventive oil spill predictions
- Can be linked / coordinated with a formal emergency “on-call” service
- Cost effective – subscription service with a reduced the setup cost
- Time effective – a trajectory forecast is made available everyday, effectively reducing the response time (reduced spinoff time)
Environmental Conditions
Depending on the area of interest, multiple wind and current data sources may be available (both modeled and empirical). RPS Environmental Data Services (EDS) delivers an appropriate blend of available metocean data to the automated spill modeling system. Such public sources might include:
- Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) currents
- MyOcean currents
- Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM) winds
- NOAA Global Forecast System (GFS) winds
- NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) Acoustic Doppler Current Profile (ADCP) data
Client-provided sources (e.g. ADCP data from private buoys) can also be incorporate as well.
Metocean Inputs
- ADCP currents data (observed data) automatically harvested and delivered as input to the oil spill modeling system
- Provides vertical currents profile for use in model
- Nearest/best ADCP selected for each subsea asset
- Modeled currents data harvested from RPS ASA’s Environmental Data Server (EDS) and delivered as input to the oil spill modeling system
- Provides full 3D currents field for use in model
How It Works
- Subscriber provides RPS with points of concern (e.g. surface platforms, coastal facilities, or along a seabed pipeline) and desired scenarios (e.g. release volume, oil type, subsurface blowout opening).
- RPS pre-loads the system with certain environmental information (e.g. bathymetry, water column vertical profiles).
-
The system automatically collects real-time metocean data (e.g. from buoys, met towers, current meters, global models) and/or forecasts in the area of interest.
-
The system automatically runs the spill trajectory model and regularly updates the subscriber with maps, GIS files, and reports. Outputs can be customized for each subscriber (e.g. locations where oil from a blowout first reaches the water surface).
This cost and time effective service can:
- Simulate spills from hundreds of locations per client, effectively tracking an entire network of pipelines and other infrastructure.
- Confirm or refute the source of observed oil spills.
- Provide responders with an immediate forecast in the event a spill occurs, reducing response time.
- Be linked with a formal, on-call emergency modeling service.
