Wrockwardine Wood, Telford
The redevelopment of Wrockwardine Wood Arts School and College created much needed affordable housing for a wide range of residents, including elderly bungalows, general needs housing for families and apartments for young couples.
Acting as Employer’s Agent and Health and Safety Advisor, we supported Trident Housing Association in the redevelopment of the college site. We coordinated the ground remediation and treatment of coal mines to deliver an affordable scheme of eight bungalows, 45 houses and eight apartments.

Challenge
Faced with the challenge of investigating and remediating five former coal mines, we provided detailed cost and procurement advice, with initial feasibility calculations proving that not all of the site could be developed viably.
The scheme was delivered on budget and although an extension of time was granted due to extreme weather, this allowed us to add further units by revisiting costs, reviewing preliminaries and making use of time lost by obtaining planning and completing design.
Solution
We were thorough in guiding our clients through the investigation and survey processes; we sought specialist advice from a ground remediation expert and corroborated our cost estimates with quotations from remediation contractors. Areas of the site in close proximity to the mines were vibro-piled as this proved better value for money and design surety over deep trench fill foundations.
The Arts College had stood on the site for 82 years so most of the local community had ties to the school. We managed to salvage the clocks from the old school clock tower and built a new one as tribute.
