Wolston Fields Waste Classification

Smiths Concrete Limited excavated aggregates for use in their concrete business which left an area that needed to be infilled with inert soil and stones. They wanted to restore the land to its original form whilst also protecting the wider environment.  

Our team provided waste classification on materials proposed to be disposed of at the site and advised the client which materials should be accepted or refused. We worked with existing site investigation reports and laboratory test results. Where the information was insufficient to enable a waste classification, we recommended further site investigation works.

Challenge

With material coming in from many different sources, it was important to assess them in a consistent manner. We needed to ensure they met the inert waste criteria set out in the environmental permit that the client held for the site.

In many instances, the source sites did not have the correct site investigations and laboratory testing to allow our team to progress with a waste classification. In these cases, we recommended further works to obtain soil analysis with the aim of proving a correct classification.

Solution

We provided consistent and rigorous assessments which reassured the client that only suitable materials were accepted into their site. This allowed them to continue operating within their environmental permit and protect the wider environment.
