Tully replacement suspension bridge
RPS has supported the Department of Defence to replace a key pedestrian suspension bridge in the Tully Training Area in Far North Queensland.
Challenge
Tropical Cyclones Larry and Yasi damaged a pedestrian suspension bridge used by Defence to traverse a creek in the Tully Training Area. Without this bridge, the full training area could not be used for training exercises due to medical evacuation limitations.
Solution: A new bridge for Tully Training Area
RPS’ defence project specialists were engaged as the Project Manager/Contract Administrator (PMCA) to provide project management support to Defence for the update of the bridge’s design. A key part of their role was to ensure the bridge would meet relevant standards and be more resilient to future extreme weather events.
Our team oversaw the construction of the new pedestrian bridge over two wet seasons. Throughout the project, they liaised extensively with local and Defence environmental authorities to ensure the construction works complied with the strict environmental requirements that are in place for the site due to its location in a UNESCO-declared World Heritage Area.
The project was successfully completed with no environmental incidents and the resulting infrastructure has reinstated the full area of available training space and reduced the environmental impacts associated with concentrating training on only one side of the creek.
