The Range
This project involved replacing an existing facility in Bristol with a new state-of-the-art distribution centre for well-known UK retailer, the Range. We served as principal designer, employer’s agent and quantity surveyor on the development, working carefully with the client to establish programme and budget.
Located on a 55-acre site, the internal area of the building is 1,158,750 ft2, making it more than 500m long and 200m wide and one of the largest in the UK. It is also supplemented by ancillary buildings on the side for The Range’s operations such as a centralised waste recovery unit.

Challenge
As well as the sheer scale of the building - the largest in the South West – the location presented several challenges to the development. Avonmouth is well-known for its problematic ground as well as demanding extensive flood alleviation measures.
Solution
Extensive investigation was carried out until we established the necessity to firstly stabilise the ground and then pile the entire building, requiring over 16,000 driven pre-cast concrete piles.
The challenging programme was successfully completed to time and budget, with all the primary works finalised in a mere 46 weeks. This was due to early procurement, both for the main contracting role and early tendering, thereby eliminating programme delay.
