The Orange Tower and Arts, Broadcasting and Media Campus, Media City, Salford

MediaCity UK is an international hub for technology, innovation and creativity in Manchester. The mixed-use development is home to a number of media organisations such as the BBC, ITV and the University of Salford.

Our engineers advised on two separate projects providing mechanical and electrical consultancy services for The Orange Tower on behalf of Peel Holdings and a new Arts, Broadcasting and Media Campus for the University of Salford.

The 158,000ft2, nine storey Orange Tower was designed to BCO guidelines for Institutional Office Buildings. Once complete, our team were commissioned to create the new Arts, Broadcasting and Media Campus within the Tower.

Client

Peel Holdings/University of Salford

Location

Salford, United Kingdom

Services provided

  • Mechanical and electrical engineering

Challenge

Our remit was to redesign and modify the base services to provide an environment in which TV and radio studios, specialist video editing rooms, teaching spaces, a cafe, specialist IT rooms, PC suites and general break out spaces could function.

Due to the nature of the operation, a significant emphasis was put on the acoustic impact of the plant and equipment to achieve a requirement for very low noise levels but high cross talk attenuation measures.

Solution

RPS modified the base build design and developed it to accommodate the specific requirements of the fit out of the Salford University Media Campus. This involved a dedicated air handling plant for the TV and radio studios and specialist ventilation and cooling to meet the specific requirements of the fit-out.

Our engineers also worked closely with fit out suppliers, contractors and specialist systems integrators to incorporate specific power and cooling requirements. This included the development of specialist low noise fan coil units to meet the acoustic needs of individual areas whilst also meeting their high cooling requirements.

All of the accommodation was designed to standards that comply with BBC specifications.

This project won the BCO Innovation Award in 2012 for the innovative way in which a standard speculative BCO office space was connected to accommodate a high-tech media school.
