Challenge

The project was an extension of the previously approved masterplan, which has seen the delivery of 900 new homes, including affordable homes and those for private sale, and new community facilities.

We completed both a Phase 1 and Phase 2 Geo-environmental and Geotechnical Assessment of the site to support the application for the development and to provide preliminary geotechnical advice relating to earthworks as well as the design of foundations, pavements, floor slabs and retaining structures. Considerations included several party wall boundaries, temporary and permanent road closures, the presence of Thames Water utilities and a high risk of unexploded ordnance being present.

Solution

It was essential for the client to understand the potential impacts of the development (both shallow and deep foundations) on existing utilities crossing the site, predominantly Thames Water assets. Our large-scale specialist Ground Movement Assessment (GMA) provided a preliminary evaluation, which enabled the utility providers to recommend for the development to proceed subject to further assessment at detailed design stage.

Due to the requirement for numerous boreholes and trial pits within the public realm and highways, it was necessary to successfully manage stakeholder interactions. This was essential both before and during the investigation works. Our team successfully managed the engagement process with statutory authorities, landowners, community groups, business owners and residents.
