The Metro Tunnel Project

RPS is involved in a city-shaping project to deliver a new rail line through the heart of Melbourne and five new underground stations.

Challenge

Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city with a population of 4.4 million expected to almost double by 2051. Investing in rail infrastructure is key to enabling the city’s transport system to grow with its population. The $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project will transform the way people move around Melbourne, with 'turn up and go' rail services and improved access to key landmarks and destinations.

The project will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south-east, with high capacity trains and signalling and five new underground stations. As a result, more than half a million additional passengers per week will be able to travel on the rail network during peak periods.

Solution

RPS was appointed by Rail Projects Victoria in 2014 as part of the Aurecon, Jacobs and Mott MacDonald Joint Venture (AJM-JV), to provide specialist communications and engagement, planning, environment and heritage services for the project’s planning and design phase.

Well ahead of major works getting underway, our team designed and implemented a comprehensive engagement program to ensure feedback from communities and stakeholders could be used to shape the design and construction methodology of the Metro Tunnel.

Combining the skills of consultants dedicated to planning, environmental services and heritage, RPS provided specialist input into the project’s Environment Effects Statement (EES), including archaeological testing to assess Aboriginal heritage values for key areas.

Our specialists were integral in delivering engagement activities with residents, businesses and stakeholders, helping the AJM-JV and Rail Projects Victoria to achieve one of the fastest planning approvals for an infrastructure project of this size and complexity in Victoria.

The Metro Tunnel is currently under construction and on track to be completed by 2025. We continue to provide services to Rail Projects Victoria as part of the as AJM-JV on the $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival and next stage rail infrastructure investments like the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.
