Thang Long Offshore Wind Project Vietnam: pre-survey technical support
Our client, Enterprize Energy, is in the early development phase of their offshore wind project off the coast of Binh Thuan Province in Vietnam.
Our client is keen to develop an initial understanding of the site’s seabed conditions, such as bathymetry and seabed features, with particular interest of sand waves for the considerations of conceptual design, feasibility and constraint studies. They also wanted to gain an in-depth understanding of localised fishing activities to identify early ways to maximise the opportunity for co-existence and minimise the risk to the project’s development.
Tight timeframes 1: international travel, nil
Local marine and survey contractors Haduco and Thien Nam Positioning Company were engaged to conduct the site work while RPS provided technical site support and supervision throughout the project.
We were working to a relatively tight delivery timeline. And with the physical aspects of this work conducted in-country, international travel restrictions in place mean that most of the planning work needed to be completed from abroad. Adding to the complexity of the survey operation was the potential for adverse weather conditions (wind and wave) which can affect the quality of the data acquisition - it was therefore important to have the right equipment onboard to meet the program objectives.

Good communication was key
Multiple virtual team meetings were held during the planning stages. RPS assigned a local English-speaking Vietnamese site representative to oversee the field work. With a good understanding of anticipated seabed and weather conditions at site, our representative ensured the survey equipment provided was operated effectively and efficiently to deliver fit-for-purpose data.
The offshore pre-survey operation was completed safely, on time. The data quality objectives met delivering an initial understanding of the seabed condition and will be a sound basis for planning the next phase - detailed geophysical and geotechnical surveys and FEED.
