Sunshine Coast City Hall

RPS’ planning consultants have provided their expertise to support the landmark city hall development on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. This innovative five-star, green-star development will house government offices, public domain and service centres.

Innovative design with complex requirements

Bringing precision and creativity to the development approvals process, our team was engaged to achieve relevant planning approvals for the new Sunshine Coast City Hall and meet both public interface requirements and commercial car parking demands.

Located in the Maroochydore CBD, the city hall is a unique site as each of the four sides of the building encounter a road frontage. Because of this, the design needed to consider and integrate the function of that street or laneway frontage, creating complications in approval negotiations.

The proposed design incorporated active sleeving on the plaza side of the development for the Council Chambers office, ground floor retail tenancies, publicly accessible areas and end of trip facilities. Working with the local council, our team managed a comprehensive design negotiation processes exploring multiple design opportunities.

The final and approved city hall design included:

  • Active land uses at ground level available for non-Government organisations
  • Opportunities for casual surveillance of the streetscape
  • Maintaining civic obligation to contribute to public safety whilst satisfying the commercial requirements of the building’s future occupants.
