Story Bridge laser scanning

Applying state-of-the-art laser scanning technologies to measure and record Brisbaneโ€™s Story Bridge, RPS has created a spatially accurate 3D model of the structure to assist Brisbane City Council with maintenance and planning.

Challenge

Brisbane City Council (BCC) undertakes a continual program of maintenance works for the Story Bridge, however with Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point both hot spots for residential development, Council requires increasingly detailed information about clearances and access for equipment, materials and workers when planning maintenance works along the 777-metre cantilevered span.

3D model of Brisbane's Story Bridge

Solution

Our surveyors used a combination of methods including laser scanning and point cloud survey, virtual reference stations (VRS) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) referencing to develop a multi-faceted package of spatial data about the bridge, which was then used to develop a three-dimensional AutoCAD model.

The data captured represents a comprehensive digital inventory of bridge components and structural elements that BCC can use to schedule maintenance and calculate the quantities of materials required for works packages. The data also provides a valuable reference to inform city planning.

Spatial methods and outputs:

  • Laser scanning
  • Virtual reference stations (VRS)
  • Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
  • 3D modelling and visualisation
