RPS Supports Central Texas Intersection Improvements

According to the Federal Highway Administration, each year about 25% of traffic fatalities and 50% of the traffic injuries in the United States are attributed to intersections. Intersection safety improvements are critical to reducing these traffic incidents. As cities and suburban developments expand, the configuration and design of safety signals, lighting, and signage need to be addressed to meet increased traffic demands.

Challenge

TxDOT in the Austin District needed to address 40 intersections in the Central Texas area to improve public safety. This included 11 new signals, 7 replacement signals, 7 signal modifications, 3 Wrong-Way Driver signs and systems, 1 safety lighting plan, 6 advanced signage plans, and 5 flashing beacons throughout Central Texas. The design plans impacted locations from Marble Falls to San Marcos.

Situation

Most projects were funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Funded projects were combined into several complete bid packages. Those without funding were designed as standalone sheets that could be combined with other designs to create full bid packages as funding became available. The estimated construction cost was $5,000,000.

Intersection Safety Issues Addressed

  • New signal design
  • Signal modification
  • Safety lighting
  • Advanced lane configuration signage
  • Flashing beacons
  • Wrong-way driver signage and warning systems

Solution

RPS performed safety assessments and design services for 40 traffic intersection improvements. Overall, the improvements provided safer turn lanes for commercial vehicles, radar detection and warning signs for wrong-way driving detection, improved visibility, advanced signage using mast arms for lane assistance, and improved roadway signage confusion. The project was completed in 2019.
