Rochdale Municipal Office

RPS was appointed to provide mechanical & electrical engineering consultancy for the design and construction of Rochdale Municipal Office, helping it to achieve its target of an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM Rating. We also provided acoustics and fire engineering expertise on the project.

The riverside offices, built on the former Yelloway bus depot site, acted as a catalyst for the wider redevelopment of the town centre. We worked closely with the architect to develop the design for what is widely recognised as an exemplar project in the design of sustainable and low carbon office buildings.

Solution

RPS worked closely with Architect Faulkner Browns to develop the design for what is widely recognised as an exemplar project in the design of sustainable and low carbon office buildings.

Our experts brought the extensive knowledge and expertise needed to achieve the desired BREEAM rating for the development. We carried out extensive dynamic thermal modelling to optimise the façade design/glazing orientation and system selection to arrive at a series of solutions that contributed to the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Rating.

Key sustainable features of the design include:

  • Biomass boiler
  • Solar thermal panels
  • Photovoltaics
  • Rainwater collection
  • Mixed mode ventilation
  • In slab cooling

We also provided acoustics and fire engineering expertise to the project.

Award-winning

The building has been widely acclaimed in the industry, winning the BCO Award for “Best Corporate Workplace” 2014, BCO “Best of the Best” in office design 2014 and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year 2013.
