In 2005, the Department of Transport and the National Roads Authority (NRA), now Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), embarked on ambitious re-signing programmes of their respective local, regional and national road networks across the entire country. This involved a bottom up review of route and network directional and tourist signage in order to bring it into line with the current Traffic Signs Manual and to strategically guide traffic to their destinations with consistency and continuity. RPS were the NRA’s design service consultancy for the delivery of this €60m re-signing programme for over 2,500km of the national road network in Ireland.

Developing a coherent directional signing strategy for a national road network in line with national standards, delivering this on a route by route basis in consultation with a myriad of Stakeholers, while at the same time dealing with constraints including bilingual destinations, tourist/leisure signage demands, and road safety considerations, presented a significant challenge to the NRA on this project, one which had never been faced before in Ireland on such a scale.
