National Road Network Re-Signing Programme

In 2005, the Department of Transport and the National Roads Authority (NRA), now Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), embarked on ambitious re-signing programmes of their respective local, regional and national road networks across the entire country.  This involved a bottom up review of route and network directional and tourist signage in order to bring it into line with the current Traffic Signs Manual and to strategically guide traffic to their destinations with consistency and continuity. RPS were the NRA’s design service consultancy for the delivery of this €60m re-signing programme for over 2,500km of the national road network in Ireland.

Challenge

Developing a coherent directional signing strategy for a national road network in line with national standards, delivering this on a route by route basis in consultation with a myriad of Stakeholers, while at the same time dealing with constraints including bilingual destinations, tourist/leisure signage demands, and road safety considerations, presented a significant challenge to the NRA on this project, one which had never been faced before in Ireland on such a scale.

Solution

RPS helped the NRA successfully complete their programme by:

  • providing strong project, cost and programme management skills and systems;
  • providing expertise and best in class design skills in the areas of wayfinding strategy development and sign face design;
  • consulting and working collaboratively with all Stakeholders including 26 Local Authorities, Fáilte Ireland (the national tourism authority), utility providers, traffic sign manufacturers and installers;
  • providing input into national signage policy standards development and market research.
