Challenge

The design of the main spine road, which needed to cross the Myton Brook, presented a particular challenge. A correctly sized culvert was required to hold back water upstream and mimic pre-development flood events without increasing flood risk downstream.

Solution

Our specialist team undertook watercourse modelling of the Myton Brook to determine the appropriate diameter of the culvert pipe required to mimic existing flows. By proposing a steel culvert pipe with splayed ends, we eliminated the need for costly and unsightly concrete headwalls, allowing the culvert to be mostly hidden from view.

Our civil engineers also designed earthworks for the large areas of open space on the site, providing a detailed 3D ground model from which the groundworks contractor could set out. Section 278 works on the A452 involved widening the existing road and a signalised 4-way junction.

We successfully supported our client throughout the planning process and gained local authority approvals.
