Challenge

The site had a long industrial heritage resulting in ground contamination comprising of hydrocarbon and asbestos. It was geotechnically challenging due to being underlain by mixed made ground deposits and alluvium. The site formed part of a former priory with significant ecologically sensitive archaeological remains that needed to be preserved.

Solution

We provided design input to confirm the scope of earthworks and remedial works and negotiated with the regulators, NHBC and site purchaser to agree a common set of performance criteria which addressed the planning obligations and supported the subsequent redevelopment.

We delivered a ground investigation and undertook detailed discussions with the stakeholders to agree the chemical and geotechnical performance criteria for construction of a development platform at the site.

Through a series of ongoing site inspections and testing, we verified the delivery of the remedial works, including the removal of contamination hot spots and inspection of stockpiles.

The works delivered an independently verified platform that met the requirements of the planning consent, developer and NHBC. The works were delivered in a cost-effective manner with majority of the materials being retained onsite.
