Challenge

The site is at risk of flooding from surface water, with a significant overland flow route cutting through the site.

The proposed development layout comprised locating residential properties on the part of the site which formed the flooding pathway. Our role involved incorporating mitigation measures into the scheme design in order to reduce flood risk to an acceptable level and satisfy the Lead Local Flood Authority.

Flooding

Solution

We constructed a 2D rain-on-grid surface water flood hydraulic model using TUFLOW software. The model was used to gain an understanding of the existing (baseline pre-scheme) flood risk to the site and informed the nature of the required mitigation measures.

Site relevelling was proposed in order to raise more vulnerable parts of the site, such as residential properties, above the surface water flood level. The route of the flow path through the site was realigned and formalised into a central corridor.

We liaised closely with the project architects as surface water flood risk was a key constraint on the site and a major driver in determining the site layout and levels. We maintained effective communication with the architectural teams throughout the scheme design evolution, interpreting the technical model results in an appropriate manner to guide their work.
