European Commission Green Capitals Award

RPS proudly serves as the Secretariat for the European Green Capital Award and the European Green Leaf Award. The awards are a European Commission initiative seeking to promote and award the commitment to green growth and sustainability into the future.

Since the launch of the award in 2008, 11 cities have held the European Green Capital title: Stockholm 2010; Hamburg 2011; Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) 2012; Nantes 2013; Copenhagen 2014; Bristol 2015; Ljubljana (Slovenia) in 2016; Essen (Germany) 2017; Nijmegan (the Netherlands) 2018; Oslo 2019; and Lisbon 2020.

The European Green Leaf, a competition for smaller cities, was launched in 2015. This is aimed at cities with 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitants.

Challenge

RPS are challenged with the promotion and sharing of the incredible works taking place across Europe in towns and cities to offset the serious environmental challenges our urban spaces currently face.

With more than two thirds of Europeans living in towns and cities, the demand on our urban spaces has never been greater. Across Europe, these challenges are being met with commitment and innovative thinking. The Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards seek to promote and reward these efforts.

The RPS team is also charged with encouraging cities to enter the awards.  This includes demonstrating the value of entering to eligible cities to inspire and motivate entries.

Solution

RPS is responsible for promoting the awards internationally, throughout the 28 Member States. We manage the awards website and implement ongoing campaigns to build awareness of the initiatives across traditional and social media, as well as through direct stakeholder engagement and events.  We actively promote the value of entering as a free international audit of a city’s environmental credentials and plans.

We develop and deliver an annual communications plan, run ongoing Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn campaigns, liaise with international media to generate publicity in traditional media platforms, engage directly with over 3,500 cities through telephone, email and postal campaigns, and produce a range of printed publications and videos to promote the awards and the winning cities.

Our team also assists the European Commission with event management for an annual awards ceremony, works with winning cities to ensure compliance with rules of competition, and participates in an annual live-streamed Applicant Workshop in Brussels.
