Etheridge Shire Masterplanning

RPS has supported Etheridge Shire Council with the masterplanning of the North Queensland shire to manage the future growth of the region and capitalise on the economic and employment opportunities.

Challenge

With $4 billion of large-scale agriculture and resource projects proposed for the shire, Etheridge Shire Council wanted to proactively plan for the significant economic and employment opportunities, and the associated population boom that would impact the region.

Solution

To prepare for and capitalise on the impacts of this growth and mitigate risk, Etheridge Shire Council engaged our Townsville and Cairns urban design and planning experts as the lead consultants to prepare masterplans for the shire’s four townships - Georgetown, Forsayth, Mt Surprise and Einasleigh. These masterplans provided guidance for the expected expansion of residential areas, and other land demands arising from the proposed developments.

Following this work our team’s expertise were engaged to prepare a concept masterplan for a future industrial precinct for the shire.

To inform the masterplanning project our team also managed the community engagement sessions, which identified issues and concerns the community had in relation to development of the region, quality of life, employment, accommodation needs and the types of facilities that are needed in the community.

Having the foresight undertake masterplanning ahead of the proposed developments, meant the council could proactively drive the planning and development for the region, rather than being driven by the proposed projects and investment.
