Environmental support for Claremont on the Park redevelopment, Perth
RPS has provided a range of environmental services and guidance to support a key redevelopment and placemaking project—Claremont on the Park—in Western Australia.
Environmental investigation for Claremont urban revitalisation
With the railway line dividing the suburb of Claremont in suburban Perth, Claremont on the Park was proposed as an urban revitalisation initiative that would better connect the community while delivering new residential and community facilities.
To prepare the site for new mixed uses, a careful program of environmental investigation was required to identify any barriers to development and remediate any contamination that was found.
LandCorp (now Development WA) engaged RPS to be the lead environmental consultant on the project. Our role was to make sure environmental processes were completed within an incredibly strict timeframe, and allow the redevelopment to progress through design and construction.
Environmental guidance to support new site uses
Even after an expansion of the original assessment area, RPS environmental consultants ensured that all environmental investigation and reporting works were completed within the allocated timeframe.
Our team drafted a Remediation Action Plan (RAP) for the contractor to remediate the site adequately and safely. The contamination investigation and remediation program, detailed in site remediation and validation reports, was subject to review by a Contaminated Sites Auditor (CSA) and the site has subsequently been reclassified by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to allow for new uses.
Our responsibilities across this project have included:
- Attending meetings with contractors, engineers and project managers
- Taking an active role in the remediation contractor procurement process
- Environmental review and evaluation of contractor tender submissions
- Conducting a second Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) after the site area was increased.
More than 750 new homes have now been created at Claremont on the Park, while the Claremont Football Club has opened facilities for the community to enjoy. The Goods Shed - a historic railway building - has also been delivered and is becoming a much-loved arts and culture centre for the community.
