Environmental management system adoption for a wind farm operator
An environmental management system (EMS) that meets ISO 14001 accreditation is a powerful tool a company can use to improve environmental performance and demonstrate compliance. Having an accredited EMS in place shows international stakeholders that the organisation is taking concrete action to manage its environmental responsibilities systematically.
Our client, an onshore wind farm operator based in Asia, sought our support in implementing the processes and systems for environmental management. The wind farm operator was keen to establish a framework that would satisfy international standards, and that could eventually be managed and updated by local staff.
By working closely with the operator in-house and remotely, RPS environmental management specialists developed an EMS that included a documentation and operations framework.
Training the local staff on the importance of the system, its implementation, and its use was critical to achieving ISO 14001 accreditation. More importantly, RPS "trained the trainers”, enabling local health, safety and environment (HSE) staff to deliver future inductions and additional training themselves.
On completion of the rollout, the wind farm operator had achieved ISO accreditation for all eight operating project entities and the corporation. Additionally, they have a trained local workforce to maintain accreditation without external support.
The accreditation delivered significant value to the client in the form of import tax relief, saving them millions.
Project timeline
RPS contracted to develop the environmental management system (a documentation and operations framework) for the corporate entity and two initial project entities that operated onshore wind farms. We provided support in the client's office for one month, then remotely for two years.
RPS staff audited and trained local teams in-country on the importance of this system and how to implement it. We supported the client in achieving ISO 14001 accreditation for the first two project entities.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, RPS worked remotely with the client to implement the management system across six additional project entities.
During this rollout, we also trained the HSE team to be able to provide future training and inductions.
Our client achieved ISO accreditation for corporate entities and all 8 operating project entities.
