Challenge

As part of the planning consent for wider remediation of the former power station site, the removal of an existing box culvert on the Darklands Brook was necessary to return the watercourse to the open channel to provide ecological benefits and reduce the flood extent upstream.

The location of the culvert presented a design challenge as its depth required significant earthwork embankments.

Solution

We designed a new section of the open watercourse using our 3D design software to interface the new channel with the existing ground to model the new watercourse banks. Cross sections and detailed setting out information were then easily generated in 3D format, allowing ease of construction for our client’s contractor.

Our civil engineers also undertook the roads and drainage design, including attenuation ponds, detailed plot levels and drainage, earthworks cut and fill, and de-culverting/replacement of two existing culverts.
