Challenge

Visible and Hidden leaks from Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s water distribution network have caused considerable strain on the environment and have proven costly.

Finding and repairing leaks on the network quickly means that we can keep the amount of water wasted every year to a minimum which is good for customers and the environment.

Solution

We employ approximately 130 staff working on leakage detection services in Wales. We have demonstrated a greater level of performance year on year, reducing leakage levels by  50% over the last 10 years.

The successful and collaborative nature of our relationship with DCWW has further enabled us to change the emphasis of our Health and Safety reporting and introduce BEST- (Behavioural Excellence Starts Today). This initiative aims to reduce Health and Safety incidents in the workplace and has allowed us to minimise lost work days and consequently maximise our time on site delivering industry leading outcomes for Dwr Cymru.

Since the introduction of BEST 4 years ago, we have demonstrated a year on year reduction of reportable accidents. Over this period reportable accidents have been reduced by 80%.

Due to the success of the BEST initiative, it is currently being rolled out across our UK Water business.
