Basis of Safety for new analytical laboratory
RPS was commissioned to explore viable technique / equipment options and produce a Basis of Safety document for the refit of an essential analytical laboratory.
The project aims to replace existing technologies with modern techniques supported by new ergonomic and maintainable equipment for sample testing.
Overview
The technique / equipment selection fundamentally affects the strategy of the safety case (e.g. inherent hazards). The Basis of Safety helps to justify the rationale for the technique / equipment selection and to define the decision-making process. This document considered the hazards throughout the lifecycle of the samples, technology and services and how they have been selected and assessed with regards to safety.

Challenge
The production of the Basis of Safety raised a few challenges; primarily working to emergent procedures / guidance provided by the client and the requirement to gain buy in from all stakeholders with assurance that their needs would be included in the new safety documentation.
In addition, the project required the review of a significant amount of techniques / equipment options within a fixed timescale.
Solution
To ensure timely delivery and the production of a document that met our clients’ needs, close collaboration was critical.
Our consultants integrated with the client design team to ensure all relevant knowledge and information was captured and recorded to inform the contents of the Basis of Safety.
Regular meetings were set up to report progress and get ongoing feedback on the document as it developed to ensure we would meet timescales. This collaborative approach, including the iterative process of producing and updating the Basis of Safety enabled us to deliver a final document that met the requirements of all stakeholders.
